What are the symptons of morning sickness? * A pregnant woman may note increased saliva, increased sensivity to certain smells and change in taste of some foods. * Symptons usually begin 4 to 8 weeks after the womans LMP(last menstrual period), peaks at about 9 to 11 weeks and go away by 14 to 16 weeks. * Nausea and/ or vomiting. WHEN TO SEE YOUR DOCTOR? Contact your health care provider if: The nausea or vomiting is severe You pass only a small amount of urine or it's dark in color You can't keep down liquids You feel dizzy or faint when you stand up Your heart races WHAT CAN YOU DO TO FEEL BETTER. * Eat a few biscuits or toast in the morning to help settle your stomach. * Eat 5 to 6 small meals a day instead of 3 large meals. *Avoid spicy and fatty foods. Eat bland foods such as bananas, rice, dry toast and soups. *Eat healthy snacks between meals such as yogurt, apple, dry fruits, salads and cheese. * Drink plenty of fluids. * Take plenty of rest. *Keep rooms well ventilated, go outside from time to time to get some fresh air. MEDICINES * Your doctor may give you vitamin B6( also called pyridoxine) to control nausea and vomiting. *Pyridoxine is given as 10 to 25mg tablet orally every 6 to 8 hours. * Doxylamine and Pyridoxine-- combination of these two drugs is given when pyridoxine alone fails to improve symptons. * This combination can be given 3 to 4 times a day. * Most nausea and vomiting are treated with the above drugs. to be continued......dr nandini shete
